Calibration Versus Verification

Calibration establishes the relationship between the machine's readings and a reference value, with a stated uncertainty. Performance verification confirms the machine still meets a stated specification, usually ISO 10360-2 or ASME B89.4.1.

Both terms get used loosely on the shop floor. The certificate should state which one was performed, and against which standard.

What a Visit Covers

Whether the request comes from a stamping plant's fixture room or a tier supplier's quality lab, a verification visit follows a fixed sequence.

  1. Scale and reader head

X, Y and Z scales are inspected and cleaned; reader head output is checked and adjusted.

  2. Geometry

Straightness, linearity and squareness are checked in the XY, ZX and ZY planes.

  3. Length measurement error

ISO 10360-2 E0 and E150 testing at 105 measurements across five lengths and seven positions.

  4. Probing error

ISO 10360-5 PFTU testing on a calibrated test sphere separate from the qualification reference.

  5. Air bearings and drives

Air supply, bearing preload and drive response are checked ahead of geometric adjustment.

Sequence of a Verification

  1. Inspect

Scales, reader heads and air bearings are checked before any measurement is taken.

  2. Test

Length measurement error and probing error are run against the applicable standard.

  3. Adjust

Geometric adjustment and error-map update are applied where the controller supports it.

  4. Verify and certify

As-left results are recorded and the certificate is issued.

Why Detroit CMM Calibration and Repair

  1. As-found and as-left

Both results appear on the certificate wherever adjustment occurred.

  2. OEM-locked maps handled

Error-map access is confirmed on the controller before the visit is scheduled.

  3. Repair on the same visit

Probe head, scale, air bearing and drive repair reduce a second trip.
